Meditation is simply being aware of being aware.
You are aware in this moment. Notice this. Shift your attention towards the experience of this. That is it. That is meditation, and the highest one at that.
If any thought, emotion or sensation or effect in consciousness appears, it is perceived by that awareness so there is no need to put our attention there, it is temporary and not consistent and won't bring us the happiness that actually lays in that awareness. We simply must understand what this awareness is and how we can realize ourselves to be that and never suffer again from personal problems/identity (the only source of mental suffering in life).
Now that you have the clarity, you will see the true meditation and see how it changes your life completely in 30 days. Stick with simply gently shifting your attention towards that which is aware of the present moment and be very consistent with it at first until it becomes automatic. It is fucking magic my dear one. I can guarantee this works 100% you can update me after a few days even.
The mechanism of the ego to keep you asleep and in delusions instead of awakening to the eternal truth of your true nature
If you go and intentionally meditate, lets take the example of sitting down to meditate (since currently it is most common, not actually the most practical way of transcending the human ego and identification).
When you meditate, you are basically making your self more aware. You are aware of all the thoughts, all the sensations, emotions. The more you stay aware, the more you are aware of thoughts, sensations and emotions without getting carried away by them and forgetting the present moment, the higher your consciousness.
The mind, or the ego (Thoughts, sensations, and emotions) will all try and make you sleep while meditating. They want to shut down consciousness, so you can keep living in this dream. They will make you feel different kind of stuff, different sensations, or specific thoughts that will make you question the meditation, or simply ask a random question on this forum, or it can make you feel such emotions that are uncomfortable, and you back down and stop being aware, and you stop it because the discomfort is too strong for you.
The key is to understand that the mind, the ego, the illusion that is blocking your clarity is playing a game with you. Its purpose is to make you sleep, while you want to awake. Be aware that the mechanics of this program that is the human ego, will make you asleep. It will distract you from the meditation or make you busy so you have other things to worry about rather than be aware and lucid in this dream.
The longer you stay aware, the easier it becomes, since you peel out the layers of the ego, the human mind, and it becomes more silent and more silent. So you can "win" this minigame of consciousness by simply staying aware, aware of the present moment and aware of the mechanism of the program that is trying to shut down the awareness. It will be really simply since now nothing can actually distract you, as you easily identify the distraction as a distraction, and you are not bothered by anything anymore, since you already know it is going to happen. If it is expected, the human mind, the ego can't fool you.
It is like someone lying to you while you already know the truth. The lie will simply look pathetic, like a joke. It won't hurt you or bother you at all, it won't make you question anything, it will simply be seen, you will be aware of it being a lie. That is all.
So next time you meditate, see it as a minigame, and do not fall into the distractions that the ego will be trying to create, different sensations in different parts of the bodies, thoughts that you have a lot of interest in, and emotions that are uncomfortable or comfortable. Instead of following this pattern that everytime fails, simply be aware of it. Good luck.
By the way, that is exactly the reason you see so many posts about: "This position is uncomfortable" or "When I meditate, I feel like I can't breathe" or "When I meditate I have really bad scary thoughts" or "I always fall asleep when meditating" or pretty much every other single post that is posted in this subreddit. It is all the ego trying to make you less aware.
